American Institute of Architecure Has Storied History

The American Institute of Architects is one of the oldest professional organizations in the United States. It was formed by a group of New York architects in 1857 and they called it the New York Society of Architects. The name was changed shortly thereafter so that it would be more inclusive of all architects. The need for a professional organization was apparent because, at the time, anybody could call themselves an architect. Over time, only licensed architects who had graduated from an approved architecture program could become a member of the organization. Robert Ivy is one of the most well-respected architects and architectural publishers of the past 30 years. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Art from The University of the South and a Master’s degree in Architecture from Tulane University.

In 1996, Robert became the Editor-in-Chief at Architectural Record, where he would lead the publication to a number of industry awards including 26 Jesse H. Neal awards. In 2001, Ivy wrote the authoritative biography of Frank Lloyd Wright assistant Fay Jones, titled Fay Jones: Architect.

Currently, Ivy is the Vice President and Editorial Director at publisher McGraw Hill Construction Media. He is a Senior Fellow at the Design Futures Council.
